And remember the joys of playing with our friends, getting mad because we had to come in and eat?

Or come home when the streetlights came on?

We were forced to eat our veggies?

We thought those were the worst things in the world.

Those are what SHOULD be childhood memories.

Let me tell you what is going on with millions of kids today, in the US alone.

Every day in the US, there are between one and three million kids that are living on the streets. KIDS. Newborns and up, the worst affected are boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 17.

Alot of them are runaways. Kids that leave the only home they have ever had, because of abuse and/or neglect. Sexual abuse - being consistently molested and/or raped by their own families. Physical abuse - parents beat these kids, sometimes near death, just because they 'can'. Mental abuse - families of these kids put them down so much that these kids feel like they are nothing, and will never be anything. When you are talked to like this constantly, you start to believe it's true.

Kids can't fight back, they are afraid to death to try and protect themselves. They just pray that it will be over soon.

THAT is the reason most kids runaway. They know that they have to get out of this situation, but they go about it the wrong way. But it is the only way they can think of.

So they run away. Where? Into the streets. They have nowhere else to go. Remember, they are KIDS. They don't know there is help for them. They are scared and alone now, in a huge world. But how do they eat? Clean themselves? Get an education?

They don't. These kids panhandle for money, sell themselves, and steal. Not because they are bad kids, but because they have to eat.

They don't have access to clean water, or heat, or anything.

Grown men are constantly on the hunt for kids of this age range, to prostitute them. They know that these kids want and need friendship, someone to befriend them and that they can 'trust'.

They tell these kids that if they do what they are told, they will have food to eat and shelter. No kid wants to die, even when they are in this situation! So this is how they 'live', day in and day out. 'Knowing' that if they stop, they will die.

So what happens then? Well, they get life-threatening diseases. They get STD's, HIV/AIDS, etc. They die from these conditions, because there is no medical help for them. They get pregnant, and thus babies are being born into this 'lifestyle'.

What happened to 'every kid deserves the right to a free education'?

These kids can't go to school. At the very least, they would be ridiculed from their peers because they are dirty. Without proof of a 'home' - a permanent address - they are not allowed to go to school.

These kids don't want to be out there, but they have no idea how to get help. Government laws are pushing them deeper and deeper into the streets. It is illegal for homeless to find refuge in parks, or city buildings, where at least they have shelter from the rain and snow. If a citizen were to give a kids even a sandwich, we would get fined!

Our government keeps helping other countries, the media tells us how bad the situation is overseas. Why is no one telling us about our own nation's kids? Everyone tries to hids this. It is time we bring it out into the open, and get our kids the help that they need. The resources to live a good life.
